Testimonials
Litigation
A criminal charge is not proof of guilt. Often, a case begins with little more than an allegation. When the question of what actually happened is contested, you need an attorney who is ready to challenge the evidence and fight for you in court.
How do you want this to go?
Negotiation
Not every case turns on whether a person is guilty or innocent. The criminal justice system is complex, and the consequences of a conviction can be severe. Strategic negotiation with prosecutors can often make a meaningful difference in the outcome of a case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need a lawyer if I’m charged with a crime?
You don’t need one, but you don’t know the rules, don’t know the options, and don’t know what to say. When your future and freedom are on the line, don’t cut corners.
What should I do if the police want to talk to me?
Politely decline to answer questions and get a lawyer involved right away. You cannot talk yourself out of being arrested – but you can make it worse.
I was just charged with a crime – how long will this process last?
Several months. An average case will close 6-12 months after it is charged.
Have you handled a case like mine before?
Probably. I’ve practiced criminal defense since 2014. It’s all that I do.
I posted bail and was released from custody. Will I get that money back?
Yes – sort of. If you are convicted, the courts will take any fines or fees out of the bail, and then they will return the remainder. If the case is dismissed or you are acquitted at a jury trial, the entire amount will be refunded.
Can you get the police reports/body cam/dash cam/etc?
Yes. The state is required to provide any reports or surveillance footage that it has in its possession. Tracking down all of the evidence is one of the first things I will do.
Where do you practice?
I am licensed to practice anywhere in Wisconsin. The majority of my time is spent in Dane County (Madison, WI) and Rock County (Janesville/Beloit, WI). My office is a short walk from the courthouse in Madison, WI.
My husband/son/brother/wife/daughter is in custody. Will you go see them?
I will visit anyone in custody for a one-hour consultation. Regardless of whether you hire me, you will not be charged for this visit.
